text_messageTexting at work is a new epidemic that is sweeping the nation, one that several people are losing their jobs over.   As a self professed texting addict, I can relate to how important it is to text all of your friends about the hideous outfit your boss is wearing today, but I don’t.  Why you may ask?  Well, it is simple, I really like my job, and I want to keep it.

Back in the day, the biggest complaint that I would hear from employers was that employees were using their cell phone during business hours.  Over the past year or so, the cell phone use has become primarily via text messaging.  However, I am not really sure why people think this is more appropriate, it’s not.  You are still using your cell phone at work, which is inappropriate and unacceptable.

Take my advice if you want to keep your job, leave the cell phone in the car during business hours.  There will be plenty of time to catch up on your lunch break.  Remember you need your job to keep the texting bill paid. :)

I wish more people would take this advise..I am a Manager and hate that this causes me to police on yet another thing. I thought it was bad when internet surfing arrived. This is much worse as it can not be tracedby the company. In our office if you get caught you are immediately written up. 3 Write ups and you are dismissed. I hear most companies do not have rules in place yet. Does your company have such rules, let me know…

I absolutely agree. My clients contstantly complain about this problem in the work place. An employer is paying you for the time you are on his dime and spending that time in a non productive way is actually stealing….How can text messaging be more important that your job or your professionalism?

Tuesday,

This is one of the biggest complaints we get lately from our employers. What amazes us is how many candidates think we are the crazyones for telling them they are not allowed to text at work!

My kids text all the time, I am really worried that when they enter the business field they will not “get” that they can lose their job over it. I feel schools should not allow phones on site.

I did not know that this was such a big issue. To hear it put that it is essentially stealing time from your employer is a wise perspective, I for one, plan to use!

I hate texting at work – it is unfair to those that work really hard.

I will have to watch my staff. The problem is you probably need to catch them in the act. Then it will be my word against their word. Is there a way to prove someone was texting, since it is their personal property?

I have already let 2 employees go over this and personal phone calls.

Texting is over rated. Is texting, OMG…C U L8R, to your friend more important than doing your job?
