Gender Bender

Let me just start by saying that we all try to not judge a book by its cover and give a first impression a fair chance.

Everyone is aware of the anti discrimination laws against age, color, race, religion, etc. But transgender is not listed leaving a small gap for states to consider.

But what would you do if you had a man, dressed as a woman, apply for an administrative position?

I work in an office full of women and let me assure you that we critique everything that walks through that front door. With our jobs, we have to. Appearance is a strong factor in most front desk or administrative positions that are located in the lobby or front desk of an office. Even if you can get past any racial or prejudice thoughts and deem him/her a good candidate, how will your employers react? And what would they think about the quality of candidates you send over?

On May 2, 2011 Hawaii became the 13th state to ban discrimination on the basis of gender identity or expression in employment. *

And more than 125 cities and counties also have similar laws. *

This law could be in the works for your area if it’s not already. Is your company, clients and staff ready to handle these applicants?

If you have any information, comments or questions please feel free to leave them in the box below.

Other States with Anti Discrimination Laws for transgender applicants in the workplace include: California, Oregon, Washington, Colorado, New Mexico, Minnesota, Iowa and Illinois.
