Interviewer Personalities & How To Make Them Love You!

The nervous feeling that takes over your body as you anxiously sit, waiting for your time to interview with the hiring head not knowing what’s in store. Will I pause too long? What if I don’t know how to answer one of their questions?! A million thoughts can go through your head as you prepare for one of the biggest challenges job seekers face….interviewers.

Lucky for you, we’re also interviewers and can give you a heads up on what to expect and how to ace the first impression!

Now onto 4 separate personalities you may encounter.

#1 – The Poker Face

You have no idea how the interview is going. He or she has thrown your confidence and whit away as you sit there trying to see a sign or any clue as to what they think of you. Keep calm, you can still win them over. Remember you are interviewing them as well. Instead of responding what you think the interviewer wants to hear, take your time and form your own answers.  Concentrate on your experience in the industry and how that relates to how perfect you are for the position. Ask questions specifically about the company as well as the interviewers personal experience with the company and what this career path could lead to.

#2 – The Detective

Was that a trick question? Bordering between nosy and paranoid, the detective wants to see proof of every certification or skill you have. They’re also going to track your every move in real life and on social media sites. Keep cool, listen carefully to each question and make sure you give complete answers. For example as you listen they may hint about what the company needs and values. If they’re questioning you for proof that you’ve worked independently on projects, it’s a good chance that they’re looking for an employee who is a problem solver and takes initiative. This personality type may also make you demonstrate your skills and ability so be ready to prove yourself!

#3 – The Intimidator

Don’t back down under pressure. It’s extremely important that you demonstrate knowledge you’ve gained in the industry and show what steps you’ve taken to better yourself. Sometimes interviewers get carried away with the power that comes along with management, so they may have forgotten what it’s like to be in your shoes. Make it clear that you are an asset to the team and bring your own strengths. Show interest in learning more about the company and the intimidators own career…also ask what advice they would give to you to follow.

#4 – The Headless Chicken

You just might accidentally be in charge of this interview. Flustered and unorganized, the headless chicken will throw several questions at you hoping that will help the interview flow. Give complete answers about your background, education and training, areas of expertise and any future career plans you may have. Use this to your advantage and ask yourself another question, do you really want to work for a company that is this unorganized, or did they have reason for the fluster. This interview is also a chance for you to choose whether or not this is a good fit for you.

As always when you have an interview, dress for success! Always wear clean, pressed clothes that show you mean business not that you can’t even handle your wardrobe. Take your resume. Do not chew gum and do not take your cell phone with you! Any beverages are strictly prohibited, have a firm hand shake and make eye contact! Smile and show respect! If you want the position at the end of the interview make sure they know you are still interested and want the job!
