Standout Resumes
Hiring heads have hundreds of resumes come across their desk during a search. It is crucial that your resume stand out in that number. It is very important to write a resume according to a description that best suits your particular career path (i.e. Accounting, Public Relations, etc.) without limiting yourself for new areas. This means highlighting the experiences and jobs directly related to your goal position. Using the buzz words and adjectives list that are identified by hiring heads and people within your chosen field will help your resume get the recognition it deserves. Remember the goal of a resume is to get your foot in the door for an interview, so that you can sell yourself further.
WorkPlace Staffing recommends:
A chronological resume is best
Put current experience first and end with your earliest work experience.
Include main responsibilities and/or achievements on the job.
Use a variety of action verbs to highlight your skills
No dates send a red flag that you may be concealing poor stability.
A conservative approach is always best
Use white or cream bonded paper
Use a common font like Times New Roman, Helvetica or Arial. They are easier on the eye and universal for e-mails and Companies that scan resumes into a database.
Do not use first person (i.e. I entered information)
Check for spelling and typographical errors.
Other resume tips:
Don't include hobbies, church affiliations or personal information such as age. It could count against you.
Make your objective about what you have to offer, rather than focusing on what you are looking for. You may rule yourself out of a good job because what you are looking for is too limited. Try: "Offering 3 years of solid experience in office support. A loyal, hardworking…"
Leave out "References upon Request" It takes up space and states the obvious. Have your references on a separate sheet that is given out upon request. It is best to have more professional (superiors you reported to) than personal names. Everyone knows that a personal reference will be positive, but lacking in knowing your work habits.
