Note From Your Career Advisor-Try Being A Marketing Detective

Are you getting frustrated with your job search because you are not getting called back or interviewed?

Well think about it this way….when you apply to jobs through websites or job boards you are competing against hundreds or even thousands of other candidates.

Sometimes companies even use automated systems that look for specific key words or phrases that could possibly skip over your resume if you do not have the specific software or skills listed in your resume/CV that they are searching for which could just be the cause of why you are not getting calls back.

TRY THIS:

Get your resume/CV in front of a hiring manager that is not currently interviewing or does not even have a job opening listed.

This way, your resume/CV is the ONLY one on their desk!

*Hiring managers have the inside scoop. Sometimes they are:

  1. Not satisfied with a current staff member’s performance, but have not taken any action to replace them.
  2. Have an opening but have not taken the time to interview or advertise yet.
  3. Have knowledge of an upcoming project that will require additional hiring.
  4. Had someone just quit or get fired.
  5. Have a skill they desire that is missing from their current team.

Another way to stand out from the rest of the crowd once you do land that interview is to demonstrate knowledge of the company or industry. Make it your mission to impress them with product awareness, services and/or competitors.

Show commitment and ask questions! This will show you are interested and serious about the position.

Try marketing yourself this way and see what happens! This should become part of your daily routine if it is not already.
